Don't forget 1729.com! You can earn $100 or even more for each learning task, although it's a little more competitive and less guaranteed on some of them. I think Balaji is one of the biggest proponents of this style of learning too.

Heya Dan, total newbie here. I appreciate your breakdowns and I think I have a better grasp now. At the risk of asking a total obvious/basic question, why is there money in playing video games or using a special browser? What's the intention behind it and how do they make money off of their users? Is it all prospecting like (if I understand correctly) the value of NFTs? Is it mining?

Also - I'm using Mogo for Bitcoin (cuz I was already using it for other stuff) and they just announced they're offsetting carbon with tree-planting. Curious if you could offer rankings/suggestions for not-earth-destroyee options and/or your take on how to approach this from an ethical standpoint. (I realize that’s pretty tricky and convoluted, but your guess is better than mine.)

Oh and lastly, a friend just referred me to coinbase, curious if you have any thoughts on that one in particular. Like, if I choose to do just one of these things, is that a good one to start with? Thankya!

hey! Thanks for the note. and the questions! they're great. I'm a quite a noob too, so i'll do my best to answer them!

Play To Earn Games:

Many games offer rewards , often in tokens, as you level up your character, abilities or tools. In the case of Axie Infinity, you earn SLP tokens. Which you can use to breed and make more NFT characters, and sell to new players.

So to answer your question, I guess it's basically a pyramid scheme. haha. I suppose SLP will only be worth something as long as new people are coming into the game. The only cost is buying an NFT character to play the game -which you buy using SLP. That make sense?

Regarding Special Browsers, like Brave. They reward people for their attention with BAT aka Basic Attention Token. Essentially you get a small fraction of the ads that are being displayed to you -- as a split model.

I havent heard of Mogo. That's really cool. I've spent the last week reading reports about the devasting effect of NFTs (esp on protocols like Ethereum) and it has me worried. I'm hoping ETH 2.0, and Proof of Stake, will help with this. we shall see.

This is a really cool project that I like: https://www.klimadao.finance/

They are reserve currency, which was a fork of Olympus DAO, which is comprised of a treasury of carbon offsets. Every KLIMA token is backed by 1 tonne of tokenized carbon reduction or removal. tbh, I dont fully understand OHM and KLIMA models. but i ape'd in.

Overall, i've become less interested with PoW (proof of work) coins. In part due to their earth destroying nature, but also just because none of them are that interesting to me.

re coinbase

I personally have not used coinbase, but I've heard good things.

In Canada, I think the best option for buying crypto is ShakePay or Netcoins - in terms of fees. but fees are always changing. so i could be wrong!

Cool, thanks for the response. I guess that getting a cut of ad revenues makes sense to my brain, but the pyramid concept - which I understand in theory - kinda makes my brain explode. It's a bit too nebulous, and it does make me wonder who will hold the bag when it falls apart. I guess that's the whole of capitalism/interest-bearing-debt systems, but the appeal of alternate currency to me is that we can stop being duped into that mindset and build a different model that doesn't have Certain Catastrophe baked in. Thanks for the links, I'll check em out!
